about

In a somewhat desperate attempt to get out of my own head, I decided to speedily record my songs over two weekends, limiting myself to using an old Fostex 4-track tape recorder, some SM-57s, and a few drum machine samples. While my ultimate hope is to use these "speed-recordings" as a template to build more fleshed out arrangements, I'm also pleasantly surprised by how some of the recordings stand on their own. So then, here is some of my cassette nonsense.

about

Jason McGovern Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Based out of the Philly suburbs, McGovern rearranges and adapts old words with new sounds and new experiences with things familiar. Often joined by his compatriots (still called the Describers) and leaning on his (loosely-defined) Americana influences, McGovern can take his songs from something contemplative and folky to something a little more rock-n-roll. ... more

Track Name: Too Long
It's felt like years since he had rest / And the earth, like a knife, keeps stabbing at his feet / He hears the lying on their breath / He feels the bloodlust, it steals away his peace / And he cries, "Where is my hope? Where is my home?"

"Too long have I been at war, too long / I lay my head far away from peace, too far / Too many have been the lies / 'Too many!' My heart cries / From the depths of my soul's fall / Through each tear I plead, I call"

The years still carry on their track / And he's borne all the scars from self-inflicted blows / Though others scowl behind his back / Through all the rubble he sees a heavenly glow / And he's carried to hope, he's carried to home

"Too long have I been at war, too long / I lay my head far away from peace, too far / Too many have been the lies / 'Too many!' My heart cries / From the depths of my soul's fall / Through each tear I plead, I call"

"And, oh, you answer me / On, you answer me / My Lord has answered me / Oh my Lord"
Track Name: Hours
The sky has changed her dress as evening brings the shade / The counted hours shake my hand, then into shadows fade

Brick by brick I build, but some are knocked away / Though I'm living in this broken house the foundation still remains

But will I? Will I remember today?

When everyday is new, where do you begin? / So I take a note and cling to hope and relive it all again

Just another twist of time and this all will be restored / And I won't weep for what I missed our lost, 'cause I'll have gained so much more

But will I? Will I remember today?
Track Name: Sit Down
There go the echoes on repeat for nights on end / When each word is questioned silence makes a steadfast friend / Scaling mountains, climbing till my hands are raw / I feel like a pack mule who has got his burdens wrong

But oh, you say / Oh you say, "Sit down"

I'm caught in a dance that does not ever want to cease / I step with the rhythm but can never stop to breath / I sweat out my doubts wondering if you will provide / With all these plates spinning, how can this be story time?

But oh, you say / Oh you say, "Sit down"

And I'm troubled by most everything when I know just one thing is needed
Track Name: The Waiting Soul
I wish I knew to be resigned and wait with patient hope / But hope delayed fatigues the mind and drinks the spirit up

Help me reach the distant goal, confirm thy feeble knee / Cure the sickness of a soul that lacks a love for thee

Cold as I feel in this heart of mine, yet since I feel it so / It brings some hope of life divine within, however low / Within, however low

I seem forsaken and alone, I hear the lion roar / And every door is shut but one and that is mercy's door

There, till the dear deliverer comes I'll wait with humble prayer / And when he calls this exile home, the Lord shall find me there

Breath from the gentle south, o Lord and cheer my from the north / Send the treasures of your word and call your comforts forth
Track Name: Suit of Skin
Hair ripped and ragged / Fingers filthy, nails jagged / The beast-man, he languished in utter defeat

Silently humbled / Mouth shuttered, words stumble / As relations all crumble in the inward retreat

Nothing left but the bones in a suit of skin / Seven years to go

Well the yield had been scattered / Cut down int he battle / Now he's grazing like the cattle and soaked by the dew

Endless self-focus / Made a meal for the locusts / This misplaced devotion, devoured and consumed

Nothing left but the bones in a suit of skin / Seven years to go
