about

Well, how about this?! I'm finally releasing a new album, called "In Fits and Starts," which I think pretty accurately reflects the process I’ve taken to finally get it finished. I’m really proud of all these songs and I’m excited to release it into the wild!

Thanks:

Jordan and Owen, thank you putting up with my fits, starts and direction changes, and sticking with me as friends and Describers.

Special thanks to Erik Sayles, Peter Linwood, Aaron Morris and Philip Vander Weide for their performances on unheard tracks and alternate takes. Their hard work is destined to live again on the Internet.

Many, many, many thanks to Mom, Dad, Karyn, Dave, Mike, Joseph, everyone in WAI, Caleb & Carolyn, Geoff, Kyle, and all my family and friends for their input, support and care.

Soli Deo Gloria.

about

Jason McGovern Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Based out of the Philly suburbs, McGovern rearranges and adapts old words with new sounds and new experiences with things familiar. Often joined by his compatriots (still called the Describers) and leaning on his (loosely-defined) Americana influences, McGovern can take his songs from something contemplative and folky to something a little more rock-n-roll. ... more

Track Name: Break Out
Slickly suited and sharply dressed
The parade of generations can never rest
Marching on to the tempo of the wind
As it cycles through the number once again

Old ideas, forgotten or abused
Are rebranded with the look of something new
But we just linger as the haze of our breath on bitter days
As we toil on and on without gain

The curtain open for the shortest time
I need a spoiler before the closing line
So I don’t careen into my final scene,
Would you break me out of this tragedy?

Each feeling and sensation is never satisfied
As we bear our frustrations from the glory we denied
Though we try to walk on, claiming that we’re filled
I know my heart is weary still

The curtain open for the shortest time
I need a spoiler before the closing line
So I don’t careen into my final scene,
Would you break me out of this tragedy?
Track Name: Check/Take
Check the pulse again and step outside the door
Try to brace myself and slip into my car
Though I know there’s just a couple miles to go
It leaves me cold

Check accounts to see if I’ve been overdrawn
If I’ve wasted everything so far away from home
Though I’m anchored and held firm within the flood
I feel alone

Take my worry, take my fury, take my pride
Take my sorrow, take my joy and take my mind
Everything I think it takes to be a man
Take it all and take me through the wilderness
To your promised land

Check the weather, then, to see if it’ll rain
It could be I’ll never see clear skies again
Always dwelling upon what has not yet been
This fear is sin

Take my worry, take my fury, take my pride
Take my sorrow, take my joy and take my mind
Everything I think it takes to be a man
Take it all and take me through the wilderness
To your promised land
Track Name: Dust
Let’s pretend I am a bastion of humility
When I’m acting like a bastard full of pride
Well I’ll hide away my fears or make them pleasing to my ears
And bottle up all brokenness inside

Let’s pretend, now, that I know what I’ve been doing here
When I’ve fumbled and I’ve broken all the rules
Well I’ll say I’m doing great, but I can’t get out the gate
And I’m sharing in the errands of a fool

Let’s pretend I am immune to isolation
When it seems like lately that’s become my deal
Do I toss aside my trust, is another friend a bust?
I’ll just bury deep this other thing to feel

“Let’s cut the pretense from now on,” he says to me
And I wince as soon as sunlight greets my eyes
As the dust reflects the day and darkness burns away
I can only bow and throw down my disguise
I can only bow and throw down my disguise
I bow down, I throw down my disguise
Track Name: Suit of Skin
Hair ripped and ragged
Fingers filthy, nails jagged
The beast-man, he languished in utter defeat

Silently humbled
Mouth shuttered, words stumble
As relations all crumbled in the inward retreat

Nothing left but the bones in a suit of skin
Seven years to go
Nothing left but the bones in a suit of skin
Seven years to go

Well the yield had been scattered
Cut down in the battle
Now he’s grazing like the cattle and soaked by the dew

Endless self-focus
Made a meal for the locusts
This misplaced devotion, devoured and consumed

Nothing left but the bones in a suit of skin
Seven years to go
Nothing left but the bones in a suit of skin
Seven years to go
Track Name: Hours
The sky has changed her dress as evening brings the shade
The counted hours shake my hand then into shadows fade

Brick by brick I build, but some are knocked away
Though I’m living in this broken house the foundation still remains

But will I? Will I remember today?
Will I? Will I remember?

When every day is new, where do you begin?
So I take a note and cling to hope, and relive it all again

Just another twist of time and this all will be restored
When I won’t weep for what I’ve missed or lost ‘cause I’ll have gained so much more

But will I? Will I remember today?
Will I? Will I remember?
Track Name: Sit Down
There go the echoes on repeat for nights on end
When each word is questioned, silence makes a steadfast friend

Scaling mountains, climbing ‘til my hands are raw
I feel like a pack mule who has got his burdens wrong

But, oh, you say, oh, you say, “Sit down”
Oh, you say, oh, you say, “Sit down”

I’m caught in a dance that does not ever want to cease
I step with the rhythm but can never stop to breathe

I sweat out my doubts wondering if you will provide
With all these plates spinning, how can this be story time?

But, oh, you say, oh, you say, “Sit down”
Oh, you say, oh, you say, “Sit down”

And I’m troubled by most everything
When I know just one thing is needed
Yeah I’m troubled by most everything
When I know just one thing is needed

But, oh, you say, oh, you say, “Sit down”
Oh, you say, oh, you say, “Sit down”
Track Name: Shattered Phrases
“Murder Mouth” leaves another curse
To set a lonesome scene
Lost in ignoble fantasy
It’s just a busted dream

Hurling phrases to an empty room
That shatter off the wall
Hoping they could be the magic words
Sure to cure us all

Rolling tape on old scenarios
And how they should have played
But if there was a second try
It’d still turn out the same

I am just an angry dog
Who never leaves his cage
So feed me scraps and see me snarl
Then slowly walk away
Just turn and walk away
Track Name: Nineveh
A long three days to walk from gate to gate
Dreading just how well the news would break
Despite his tries to seal the message shut
Every page of script refused to be cut
And all the words fell out

Well he took a call and promptly turned around
Tossed beneath the waves and nearly drowned
Deserted to the darkness of the deep
Now he catalogs and contemplates his peace
And all the words fell out

An image in a package in a box
A holiday I raged around the block
Capture every worry for each change
And let every angry flame fade away
And let the words fall out
